How to Cancel Claude Pro (or Max, Team): Step-by-Step Guide 2026

Cancelling Claude Pro takes less than 2 minutes. Here is the exact process, what happens to your access, the refund policy, and how to manage billing for all plan types.

How to Cancel Claude Pro (Step by Step)

1

Open Claude and go to Settings

Click on your profile icon or avatar in the bottom-left of the Claude interface. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.

2

Navigate to Billing

In the Settings panel, click on the Billing tab. You will see your current plan, next billing date, and payment method.

3

Click Cancel Plan

Under your current subscription details, click the Cancel Plan or Cancel Subscription button. You may be asked to confirm the cancellation.

4

Confirm cancellation

Anthropic may ask for a reason (optional). Confirm the cancellation. You will receive a confirmation email.

5

Access continues to period end

Your Pro access remains active until the end of the current billing period. After that, you automatically revert to the free tier.

What Happens When You Cancel?

+ Access continues

Your Pro (or Max) access remains active until the end of the billing period you have already paid for.

+ Reverts to free tier

After the period ends, you automatically drop to the free tier. No action required - it happens automatically.

+ Conversation history kept

All your past conversations, Projects, and shared context are preserved. Nothing is deleted.

- No refund on current period

Anthropic does not pro-rate refunds for the current billing period. Billing errors are handled by Anthropic support.

- Claude Code access ends

After reverting to free, you lose Claude Code access (except for limited monthly evaluation credits).

- Opus access ends

Opus model access is not available on the free tier. Past Opus conversations remain visible in history.

Downgrading Instead of Cancelling

You do not need to cancel to reduce your plan. Downgrading is possible at any time, takes effect at the next billing cycle, and keeps your account active.

Managing API Billing (Anthropic Console)

API billing is separate from subscriptions

If you use the Claude API through the Anthropic Console, billing is managed separately from your claude.ai subscription. To control API spending:

  • Set a spending cap: In the Anthropic Console under Billing, set a monthly spending limit. Claude will stop accepting API calls when the limit is reached.
  • Deactivate API keys: You can pause API usage by deactivating or deleting API keys in the Console. Existing data is not affected.
  • Monitor usage: The Console dashboard shows token usage and cost by model, day, and API key in real time.

Annual Plans: Cancellation Policy

Claude Pro offers an annual billing option ($17/month, $204/year). If you cancel an annual plan, the policy is:

  • + Your annual plan access continues until the end of the 12-month period
  • + Anthropic does not typically refund the unused portion of annual plans
  • + At the end of the period, the plan does not auto-renew if cancelled
  • + For billing disputes, contact Anthropic support directly

Max plans are currently monthly-only as of April 2026 - no annual option available for Max.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a refund from Claude?
Anthropic does not offer pro-rated refunds on the current billing period. If you cancel Claude Pro today with 15 days remaining in the month, you keep access for those 15 days but do not receive a partial refund. If you were charged in error (duplicate charge, billing error), contact Anthropic support at support.anthropic.com to request a refund for the specific charge.
How do I downgrade from Max to Pro?
Go to Settings then Billing on claude.ai. Select Change Plan and choose Pro. The downgrade takes effect at the end of your current billing period - you keep Max access until then. Your Max subscription ends and Pro begins the next billing cycle. No data is lost during a plan change.
What happens to my conversations if I cancel?
Your conversation history is preserved after cancellation. You revert to the free tier with access to your past conversations. However, conversations that used Opus (not available on free tier) will still be visible in history but you cannot start new Opus conversations. Projects may have reduced functionality on the free tier.
Can I pause my Claude subscription instead of cancelling?
Anthropic does not offer a subscription pause feature. Your options are: keep the subscription active, downgrade to a lower plan (Pro if on Max), or cancel entirely (revert to free). If you are going on holiday or have a slow period, Pro at $20/month may be worth keeping rather than cancelling and losing any annual pricing you may have.
How does the 5-hour usage window reset?
The 5-hour usage window is a rolling window, not a daily reset at midnight. The window starts from the time of your first message and resets 5 hours later. If you send your first message at 2pm, your window resets at 7pm. If you send messages throughout the 5-hour period, you still only get one window. This applies to all paid plan tiers.
